KSLA Seminar: Forests, Bioenergy & the Global Climate, Stockholm, Sweden

Forests, Bioenergy and the Global Climate

There is a wide consensus in the scientific community that energy systems, which rely on fossil fuels, are unsustainable. Wood-based solutions have been proposed as an alternative and gained wide support. However, disagreement exists among experts as to whether contemporary forest management as a source of wood-based alternatives is indeed sustainable. In February 2016 the journal Science published a paper stating that “Europe’s managed forests contribute to warming”, followed by a letter from eminent scientists to ten US senators in which they question the carbon neutrality of forest bioenergy. These publications contradict earlier views that are widely published in scientific literature and cited in, for example, the assessments of the Inter-Governmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC).

In Europe, forest based biomass used to be generally viewed as sustainable, carbon neutral, and a solution to on-going climate change. The aforementioned recent publications suggest that the role of forestry in climate mitigation is much more limited than stated earlier. Given the importance of woody biomass in the energy production of Sweden and Finland, the new research received much public attention. How can this dispute be understood? Can the dispute be settled or do we need to adopt a new approach and strategy to forest management especially in light of the Paris Climate Agreement?

Swedish Association for Energy Economics Conference, Luleå, Sweden

Meeting Sweden's current and future energy challenges

We are pleased to welcome you to the Swedish Association for Energy Economics (SAEE) conference 2016. The conference will be held August 23-24 at Luleå University of Technology (LTU) in Luleå, Sweden.

Luleå University of Technology has a broad range of energy related research, including not only energy economics but also other research subjects such as other social, engineering, natural sciences as well as in humanities. The main campus is located just outside Luleå city center, easily accessible via public transportation. The research is conducted in close cooperation with firms and other organizations in order to strengthen its societal benefits and applications.

Luleå city is located in the intersection between Lule River and Gulf of Bothnia making water and the extensive and beautiful archipelago dominant features of the city. Kallax airport, located just five kilometers outside the city, is the sixth largest airport in Sweden with frequent departures to e.g., Arlanda, Stockholm.

We invite participants from a wide range of research disciplines with energy as the common denominator and will discuss solutions to a number of current and future energy challenges in Sweden, including integration issues with neighboring countries. The conference will address the full range of energy issues that is of interest for academics, analysts, policy-makers and industry participants.

The aim of the conference is to advance the knowledge about economic, technical, social and institutional prerequisites for a sustainable transformation of the Swedish energy system and explore its dynamic consequences on energy markets, technologies and systems as well as on the development of technology and markets.

On behalf of the organising committee I wish you all a very warm welcome to Luleå For this special event.

ERIFORE Workshop on Forest-based Bioeconomy Infrastructure, Leuna, Germany

1st Workshop on Forest-based bioeconomy infrastructure, Leuna, Germany

Fraunhofer CBP and VTT welcome you to the ERIFORE First Workshop on 6th September, 2016 in Leuna, Germany.
The aim of the workshop is to present an overview of European forest based research infrastructures and to identify key development needs and bioeconomy value networks.
ERIFORE is a Horizon 2020 funded project with the aim to establish a cooperation network between European open access research infrastructures in the field of forest based bioeconomy (www.erifore.eu).
The project utilizes a participatory approach to involve a variety of actors in a dialogue on the research infrastructure capabilities and future development needs in order to establish a strong collaboration network in Europe.
Within the workshop ERIFORE teams will present data on European forest-based bioeconomy infrastructure in the areas of biomass sourcing, biomass pretreatment, chemical and biotechnological conversion as well as downstream processing. Gathering together main research institutions and key industrial players active in this field opens up a unique opportunity for networking, discussion of future strategies and exploitation of knowledge.
ERIFORE consortium is happy to invite research institutions and stakeholders to visit Fraunhofer CBP.
Venue and traffic connections The workshop will be held at SKYHOTEL Merseburg, Thüringer Weg 28, 06217 Merseburg located near the chemical site of Leuna and the piloting facilities of Fraunhofer CBP. Please find more information: How to reach Leuna.
