environmental_600Scientists on the platform Bio4Energy Environment and Nutrient Recycling perform research with the aim to render waste products or surplus energy from biorefinery useful for other processes, or to check the efficiency and sustainability of products or processes over their life cycle. Photo published with permission.Researchers on the platform Bio4Energy Environment and Nutrient Recycling have set out to provide the checks and balances in the work of the overall research programme to create environmentally-sound and sustainable biorefinery processes. These should be made to operate efficiently and turn out energy-efficient products, as well as cause or produce no or only a minimum of environmental pollutants and undesirable by-products or waste.

General objectives are:

• To contribute to the development of environmentally-sound and sustainable forest-based biochemical and thermochemical industrial processes;

• That the ecological footprint in terms of emissions of substances that are hazardous to soil, water and atmosphere should be minimised and;

• That complete biomass use loops should be created.

Specific goals include:

• The recovery and purification of nutrients from waste streams. Deeper understanding of the impact of recycling various nutrient/ash mineral assemblies on soil chemistry and plant availability;
• The generation of value-added products from waste streams: Adaptation of an algae satellite loop to a pulp-and-paper process environment;
• Understanding the role of particulate matter from flue gas for the formation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in thermal conversion processes;
• The minimisation of gaseous and particulate inorganic and organic hazardous emissions from thermal conversion processes and;
• The revision of existing and future biochemical and thermochemical conversion processes to identify potential environmentally harmful impacts and incomplete use loops.
