Bio4Energy system analysis researchers at Umeå, Sweden have joined up to issue guidance on the way in which life-cycle assessment (LCA) may be applied to technology-based projects in the areas of advanced biofuels, ‘green’ chemicals or bio-based materials, in line with the topical focus areas of the research environment.
In a new compendium, which starts with an introduction to the LCA method and the need for its application, they outline finished and ongoing LCA-to-biomass projects shepherded by two expert teams at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and Umeå University, respectively.
“We can help project owners get an overview of the system or context in which their technology product or process is placed, from the obtention of the raw material until the end of life”, Athanassiadis said;
“In doing so, we trace the environmental impacts of the system and identify which process steps take a toll on the environment… From there we can make suggestions on ways to lessen these impacts”.
The compendium contains summaries of what are deemed to be the most useful results of LCA projects performed since the inauguration of Bio4Energy System Analysis and Bioeconomy—one of the seven Bio4Energy research and development platforms. Its membership spans the three Bio4Energy partner universities and the RISE Research Institutes of Sweden.
The work on the platform has given rise to a wealth of national collaborations through the f3 Swedish Knowledge Centre for Renewable Transportation Fuels and the associated Collaborative Research Programme.
