The Department of Chemistry at Umeå University is one of the largest departments within the Faculty of Science and Technology and has about 200 employees, of whom about 40 are doctoral students, and strong and expanding research. Project description

The project "High-throughput development of improved microbial production of arginine from forest-industrial residual streams" will be carried out as a collaboration between Umeå University, RISE Processum and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. The amino acid arginine has been shown to have several good properties as a bio-based fertilizer for forest plants. The project concept is based on the use of forest-industrial residual streams as a production medium for arginine-producing microbial strains. These will be developed with respect to increased arginine production through advanced molecular mutagenesis and selection.

The project will benefit from new investments in research infrastructure that RISE is making at Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, within the framework of the High Coast Innovation Park. The research groups behind the project are linked to the Strategic Research Environment Bio4Energy, which is dedicated to high-quality research on and education in biorefinery.

Participation in the project will provide merits in areas such as development and selection of microbial strains, molecular and physiological characterisation of microorganisms, chemical analysis of fermentation products, as well as biorefinery processes based on the use of forest-industrial residual streams. The postdoctoral studies will include both experimental microbiological and biochemical methods, as well as training in written and oral communication of research results.

The fellowship covers full-time studies for two years starting on 1 January 2022 or by agreement. Place of study is Örnsköldsvik. The fellowship amount is SEK300,000 per year and the project will be financed by the Kempe Foundations.

Qualifications

The eligible candidate should hold a doctoral degree or a foreign degree that is deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree, with a focus on Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology or the equivalent. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the closing date of the application. A candidate who has completed their degree prior to this may be considered, if special circumstances exist. Special circumstances include absence due to illness, parental leave or clinical practice, appointments of trust in trade unions or similar circumstances.

Other requirements include good co-operation skills and good knowledge of spoken and written English. Documented theoretical and laboratory skills in biochemistry and microbiology or equivalent skills, are required.

Practical knowledge of the analysis of metabolites by liquid chromatography (e.g. HPLC and HPAEC) is desirable. Theoretical and laboratory experience of development and selection of microorganisms, of molecular analysis of microorganisms, of big data analysis and statistical methods, of high-throughput systems, and of biochemical separation processes will be meritorious. Knowledge of biorefinery processes, including forest-industrial processes, will be an advantage.
